As infrastructure programmes become larger and more complex and ever more tightly managed, so the importance of good risk management has risen. With the importance of risk management rising, it is critical that individual risk owners can fully understand and properly manage their risks and remain cognizant of the effects of other risks in the programme on their projects. By following the APM risk management guidelines, having a good appreciation for risk treatment and action planning and adopting a good quality risk management IT solution that uses Monte Carlo simulation. Major programmes are far more likely to deliver better financial success and on time delivery.

Risk Management is often seen as unwieldy, specialist and uninteresting. To be successful, it needs participation at all levels in an organisation. During this workshop-style session, we will explore ways in which we can engage people in risk management. From reframing risk management for people working in projects to adding value to management decision-making, we will see how we can motivate good risk management, and make it feel easier and more relevant.

11:15 am      Using Monte Carlo analysis to improve confidence in your project schedule. – Mr Andrew Ferguson, Principal Consultant, Risk Decisions Pty Ltd.


Andrew will initially address the need for sound risk capture and analysis, presenting some risk capture techniques in capital projects. The talk will explore techniques for risk analysis such as schedules, costings in conjunction with project and Portfolio Risk Analysis for Contingency EstimationFinally presenting key examples of risk analysis outputs and reports.

Mr Paul Pring, Major Programme Director Bittaford Consulting Ltd.

Paul Pring is a Major Programme Director who specialises in the delivery of time critical programmes within high-risk environments.  He has been using risk management solutions within major programmes for many years and has delivered significant savings by implementing a proactive risk solution alongside the scheduling and cost planning. Delivering major programmes such as the Southern Region New Trains Programme, a complex £2.75bn programme delivered in just 18 months with a saving of £300m to the Client budgets, a large area £100m radio communications programme in just 15 months where time was critical due to new legislation and a US$1bn power station design and construction programme in 18 months, guaranteeing 24/7 power provision for millions in a conflict zone.

Mr Andrew Ferguson, Principal Risk Consultant Risk Decisions Pty Ltd.

Andrew is an experienced Chartered Professional Engineer and Principal Risk Consultant who has worked across a range of industries including transport, mining, construction, water infrastructure, engineering systems, capital and maintenance projects, business operations and aerospace at senior levels in various capacities in both permanent and contract roles. Andrew supports Predict! risk software clients across the infrastructure and engineering industry sectors by implementing and managing world class risk management frameworks for both capital projects and ongoing operations.  Andrew has consulted to many organisations on diverse risk management system issues.  He has conducted and managed project and enterprise risk analysis tasks since 1996. Andrew is contracted to Risk Decisions Australia; who provide and support Predict! risk software systems for Australian and Asia Pacific corporations and government bodies.  He is also currently engaged in several capital project management tasks including risk analysis.
